Nueva Vida by Jack Thompson for FUNERIA®

Painted ceramic urn with ceramic lotus flower adornment

Romantic, beautiful, and replete with symbolism, the vessel appears to be a small boulder with a blue lotus emerging from its crown, but is in fact a very light clay hollow vessel. Its concept, charm and exquisite execution all contributed to Jack Thompson earning the People’s Choice Award at the close of FUNERIA’s 3rd international Ashes to Art® exhibition in 2006.

The lotus is referenced in ancient and modern texts and belief systems, stemming from its nature as an object of rare beauty that blossoms in murky waters, opens to sunlight in the morning, and closes its petals at night. It is associated with creation myths, resurrection and enlightenment and was preserved and represented in many forms in the tombs of Ancient Egyptian nobility as a tribute to their divinity and anticipated rebirth in another realm.
